 Footwear modifications are custom changes made directly to your shoes to help reduce pain, improve comfort, and support proper movement. These modifications are often recommended when foot, ankle, knee, or lower-limb pain cannot be fully managed with footwear alone.

Modifications can be added to everyday shoes, athletic footwear, and work boots to enhance stability, redistribute pressure, and improve overall function allowing your shoes to work with your unique biomechanics.

 

Common Footwear Modificaitons

Heel Lifts

  • Used to address limb length differences.

Rocker Soles (Toe, MTP, Ankle, Heel Rocker)

  • Help reduce pressure on the forefoot, assist with stiff or fused joints, and improve forward momentum during walking.

Medial or Lateral Sole Flares

  • Added to widen the base of the shoe and enhance stability for ankles that roll inward (pronation) or outward (supination).

Sole Wedges (Medial or Lateral Heel Wedge / Forefoot Wedge)

  • Used to correct foot alignment, reduce pressure on painful areas, or assist with knee alignment concerns.

Metatarsal Pads / Bars

  • Reduce pressure under the ball of the foot and relieve pain from metatarsalgia, Morton’s neuroma, or calluses.

Extended or Reinforced Heel Counters

  • Improve rearfoot stability and control excessive heel motion.

Spot Stretching 

  • Creates extra space for bunions, hammertoes, prominent joints, or sensitive areas.

Carbon Toe Plate

  • Limit excessive bending of the shoe for forefoot injuries, arthritis, or surgical recovery.

Sole Widening

  • Adjusts overall base width for stability or a better match to the patient's foot structure.

Excavations or Pressure Relief Areas

  • Offload ulcers, corns, calluses, or painful bony prominences.
